How to Make a Timber Dog Bed with a Mattress
Part One - Instructions on how to make a timber frame for a dog bed:
Materials you will need:
- Timber planks (size and number will depend on the size of the bed)
- Saw
- Measuring tape
- Drill
- Screws
- Sandpaper
- Stain or paint (optional)

Steps
Step 1: Determine the size of the dog bed and the desired height of the frame. Measure and cut the timber planks to the appropriate lengths. You will need four planks for the base frame and four planks for the top frame.
Step 2: Sand the timber planks to ensure they are smooth and free of splinters.
Step 3: Assemble the base frame. Place two of the timber planks parallel to each other, and then attach the other two planks at a 90-degree angle to the first two planks to form a rectangular shape. Use screws to secure the planks together.
Step 4: Repeat step 3 to create the top frame.
Step 5: Attach the top frame to the base frame. Place the top frame on top of the base frame and align the corners. Use screws to attach the top frame to the base frame.
Step 6: Sand the entire frame to remove any rough edges and ensure a smooth finish.
Step 7: Stain or paint the frame, if desired.
Step 8: Place a piece of fabric or cushion inside the frame to create the bedding for your dog.
Step 9: Place the frame in a suitable location for your dog, and enjoy your handmade timber frame dog bed!
Note: These instructions can be adapted to create a frame of any size or shape, depending on your needs. You can also add additional support beams or cross braces for added stability, especially for larger dogs or dogs with mobility issues.
Part Two - Instructions on how to make a comfortable cushion/mattress
Materials you will need:
- Foam mattress or cushion (size and thickness will depend on the size of the bed)
- Fabric (enough to cover the mattress or cushion)
- Sewing machine or needle and thread
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
- Pins

Step by step instructions:
Step 1: Measure the size of the foam mattress or cushion and cut a piece of fabric to the same size, leaving an additional inch on all sides for seam allowance.
Step 2: Pin the fabric together along three of the edges, leaving one edge open.
Step 3: Sew the three pinned edges together using a sewing machine or needle and thread. Leave a gap of a few inches on one side to allow for the insertion of the foam mattress or cushion.
Step 4: Turn the fabric right side out through the gap.
Step 5: Insert the foam mattress or cushion through the gap.
Step 6: Pin the gap closed.
Step 7: Sew the gap closed using a sewing machine or needle and thread.
Step 8: If desired, you can add decorative touches such as piping or buttons.
Step 9: Place the cushion inside the timber frame dog bed.
Step 10: Enjoy your comfortable and handmade timber frame dog bed with cushion/mattress!
